How to plan an Arangetram
2 min read Updated October 14, 2026

An Arangetram is a dancer’s or musician’s first full solo performance, after years of training, and the guru decides when the student is ready. For families it is part recital, part celebration, and planning starts long before the stage.
9 to 12 months before
- Agree the date with the guru, who will set the repertoire.
- Book the venue: an auditorium or hall with a proper stage, lights and sound.
- Book the orchestra through the guru, such as nattuvangam, vocals, mridangam, violin and flute.
- Set a budget for costumes, jewellery, orchestra, venue, photography and food.
3 to 6 months before
- Order costumes, which often need fittings, and arrange jewellery.
- Book a photographer and videographer, and a makeup artist experienced with stage makeup.
- Plan the program booklet with the pieces, their meanings and the orchestra.
- Send invitations, with a link where guests can RSVP.
The final month
- Hold a full rehearsal at the venue with the orchestra and lights.
- Confirm headcount for food and seating.
- Brief volunteers on reception, the green room and the program booklets.
- Set up a livestream for grandparents and teachers in India.
